ADAM NICKEL
(he/him)

is a Canadian interdisciplinary artist and student attending UFV School of Creative Arts exploring elements of storytelling, cosmology, religion, and personal recollections expressed through dark, poetic narrative.

Preferred mediums consist mainly of found object sculpture installation, and experimental video & audio recordings. Drawing from both real life experience and fictional literature, his work recontextualizes themes of lovecraftian horror and ritualistic iconography. His work is meant to deliver an immersive, personalised mythology relative to his unique style of world-building.

He has since worked on independent sculptures working with artists Xafya, Sam Street and Ty Martens and has had work shown in sculptural group shows in Vancouver, BC, Zurich, SZ and Abbotsford, BC.

Since founding experimental collective and label Passkey alongside Oeane Robinson, he’s worked on stage design for a collaborative event with Sarahsson hosted by One Winged Angel. Other stage design installation includes 2 events hosted by Passkey, one for the release of nsc’s album ‘Peace Symbol’ and one for a show performed at VIVO Media Arts Centre.

He has recordings available on formforum’s ‘Deaccession Forms’ compilation. Other musical performances include radio appearances on Hong Kong Community Radio, and Vancouver’s CiTR 101.9, and live events with frequent collaborator x/o as well as Swan Meat, Estoc, Umru, Endgame, and a duo act with Swiss artist Xafya known as Sintering for Endless Bazaar
Lucerne.

LCL (20320), 2022

LCL, watery and amber in color, is a pellucid liquid which through oxygenation and neurotechnology creates a mental pathway between the pilot and their corresponding Evangelion Unit. Its name written in Hebrew Gematria is 20320. The Spanish word for sky or heaven is “El Cielo” which alludes to the pronunciation of its name.

Stare into the eye. Who is that which you love the most?

HURRICANE LANTERN, 2023

A boy stays awake for hours into the early morning, sailing aboard a fishing boat, the lonely light of his stern-fixed lantern reaching across the waters. A fire burned to red hot coals in a chain linked core, the light is maintained by igniting shredded cloth over the embers, wetted on ambergris fingertips. The boy falls asleep at the sternpost, letting the lantern overburn itself. A molten, black oil outpours the core, spills and consumes nearly everything it touches.

In depths engulfed, the light endures reclaimed. The sight of the lantern on the water held in memory, made image, like the blood-drops on a butterfly’s wing. The hurricane lantern is bestowed a wretched autonomy.

GRACE MULTIPLIED BY ORDINAL PERFECTION, 2023

A blackened altar station of some perverse sepulchre is shrouded by a heap of stones held together as if by some unknown force. The waxen, bubbling surface moves and shifts along itself as if it were breathing, it writhes and twists like tendrils. Under the cover of the hearth’s roof sits a blue bowl containing burnt offerings and the Skull of an Eastern cottontail rabbit; the bowl is exalted in reverence and held up by 3 bronze cherubs.

You are in a different room, but you are not far away. You are separate, but connected. It will not be long before you are reunited, how do you feel?

THE REPENTANCE OF NINEVEH, 2023

Inspired by John Martin’s 1829 oil painting of the same name.

Mountainous separation between the divine and His people is suddenly interrupted. Celestial light cracks the otherwise blackened sky into 3 exact parts. Looking up from the stone steps leading from the water, people are awestruck and fall to their knees.
